Citizen Project Requirements

Before applying to take part in the Citizen Project, please read the project requirements below.

We have also produced the requirements in word or pdf format if you wish to print them off.

The project is open to students between 11 – 16 years olds to run a community project or a social enterprise (a mini-business with social objectives whose profits will be re-invested in the community).

The project funds must be used to deliver Citizenship and Enterprise education within a specific year group, a special class or the school council.

Successful bids will demonstrate an element of growth potential and longevity. Ideality each project should show the potential to self fund in the future or develop new projects.

Funds will be paid into a school account by cheque. These funds are subject to project approval at the bid stage. Each subsequent stage of funding is dependant on a full progress report and accounts summary.

The Citizen Project reserves the right to withhold payment in the case where project objectives are not being met.

A hard copy of accounts and receipts should be kept and submitted at the end of the project.

The Citizen Project reserves the right to withdraw funding where it feels the principles and objectives of the Citizen Project are being undermined.

Each school must apply via our website with the following information:

  • Your Login and contact details - You can choose the username and password used to login to the site if your initial application is accepted.
  • Your Team - Your teacher and student co-ordinator's details
  • Your Project idea - Who will benefit from the project and why? If you don't have an idea at this stage, then leave this field blank.

Once your initial application is accepted, you must then make a formal project bid in the 'Group Project Bid' section. Funds will only be released when each area of the Group Project bid is completed and agreed by us. From the date that funds are first issued, schools will have 1 year to achieve their outlined project objectives.

Schools that fail to make a formal project bid after making an initial application will be deleted from the website after 1 year and will need to re apply.

Each student is required to create a personal student record and submit the following sections completed: My Skills and The End evaluation. Once logged in, teachers are able to track their student's progress through the 'teacher project record' section.

To qualify for the ASDAN ‘Active Citizen Award’ an estimated 60 hours of student participation time is required and your school must be registered with ASDAN. For more information please read our section on ASDAN awards or visit www.asdan.co.uk

Project Focus -
Ridgeway High School
One of the school council members has a younger sister at one of the local junior schools. The junior school has sent a request to parents asking for help making Story Sacks. The pupil from our school saw the request and would like pupils from our school to help. The council have been in touch with the junior school - Hillside Juniors and the Head is delighted with the idea.
The Project - The pupils would visit the junior school and talk to the class teacher and a number of books would be selected. The pupils would then make characters to match the story which can be used by the class teacher to encourage and stimulate the children. Our pupils would make the characters in textiles and construction technology. They would also like to video the pupils when the story is being read and put this onto the school web site to encourage other schools to do the same.

The team - The team will be pupils from year 9 as they have the design technology skills to produce a high quality product. The team will be divided into groups as some pupils will work on the design of the characters ie will it be a puppet, soft toy, constructed from wood etc. Some pupils will work out the cost of the materials needed and will present a Business Plan to the school Bursar for funding. All pupils will be involved in the making process. Some pupils will be sent to the junior school to use a digital video camera to video the story being told and load this and other information about the project onto the school website.

Timescale - The entire project will take a term and will run from Easter to the end of the summer term in total. Final objective is the presentation of the story sack and the video.
