Plan!

Make detailed plans on what you need to do.

What is your message, who is your target audience?

How feasible are your ideas and who is doing what?

What are the practical implications of organizing this?

1. Making the most of family contacts

Almost everyone will have relatives or friends of the family in business of one sort or another.

These people can prove to be very valuable and you need to think about how they can offer support without increasing their workload.

What you need to do

  1. Make a list of all people you know who may be able and willing to help in some way
  2. Consider how your contacts may be able to help you before you approach them
  3. Complete the following table and use the examples for ideas: (using an additional sheet as necessary).
Contact Name
Business Type
Type of possible support
Contacted
Outcome
Dad Runs a bar Organize a darts tournament 13 February Tournament planned for March 12. Entry fee £7 per team of 2. Prize £50 behind the bar.

2. Getting sponsorship

Companies are always looking to get good publicity in local and national press and are prepared to sponsor projects if they believe they will benefit. Companies do not give money away for nothing and you will need to research the companies carefully.

What you need to do

  1. Prepare a general letter that you can easily adapt to any company – it is worth spending a long time on this to get it right
  2. Compile a list of companies who may be interested in supporting you
  3. Ensure you address the letter to an actual person – you may need to call the reception to ask who would be the best person to address your letter to
  4. If you have not heard anything 2 weeks after you sent the letter, call the company to see if there has been any progress.

3. Getting in Local and National Newspapers

You can benefit greatly by getting in the press. Not only is it great to see yourself in print, but also it is an excellent way of improving your chances of generating sponsorship and ensuring good attendance at your various Money Management events. Publicity is also a great way to raise the profile of your Citizen Project within the community.

What you need to do

  1. Make a list of contacts at all your local newspapers, local radio stations and national newspapers
  2. Make sure you write up all your major events and submit them to your contacts as a press release.
